Meet Luke: Swimming Teacher in the North East

At swim, our teachers are passionate about giving children the confidence and skills they need in the water. Today, we caught up with Luke, one of our North East swimming teachers, to hear more about his journey and what he loves most about the job.

What inspired you to become a swimming teacher?
I had been shadow coaching at my club for some time and loved the feeling of seeing the work pay off for the kids. I was asked by my manager if I would consider it, and I wanted to challenge myself, so I agreed!

Did you always love the water, or did that passion grow once you were qualified?
I used to hate it when I was younger! Until the age of 8, I never wanted to get in. As soon as my swimming lessons started, that all changed, and I worked my way to a club to compete.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Easily seeing kids say they can’t do something, then immediately prove themselves wrong and gain that confidence they needed.

What is your favourite stage to teach?

That’s a tough one! When I first started, I was terrified of the little ones coming from a club background and not knowing how to talk to them. Now I love all of them! If I had to choose, I’d say Swim 3. They learn lots of new and technical things without armbands, and I like helping them get prepared for the challenge of Swim 4!

Do you have a favourite theme to teach?
I think Animals. The theme and lesson objectives blend together really well and make it simple and fun to teach.

How do you keep your lessons fun and engaging?
I’m typically known for being very energetic. I always try my best to let that shine through in the lesson!

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a swimming teacher?
Just do it (Nike don’t sue me). You’ll learn so much about yourself, and any worries you had (if you were nervous like me) will vanish as you settle in with your team.

Luke’s journey shows that even reluctant swimmers can grow into confident, passionate teachers. His energy, enthusiasm, and commitment inspire his swimmers every day and we’re proud to have him as part of the swim team.
